British Airways seating guide

British Airways Seat Selection: Fees, Free Seats & How It Works

British Airways seat selection may be included, available for a fee or offered without charge only at a later stage. The result depends on the fare, cabin, British Airways Club or oneworld status, passenger needs, operating airline and seats still available.

In short: Check the seat map while booking or in Manage My Booking. First includes free selection from booking; other cabins do not guarantee free advance selection by cabin alone. Passengers other than Economy Basic can generally choose an available seat without charge when check-in opens 24 hours before departure unless an earlier entitlement applies.

British Airways seat selection: the quick answer

Advance seat-selection eligibility depends on the fare, cabin, British Airways Club or corresponding oneworld status, passenger circumstances, operating airline and seat availability. Economy Standard, Premium Economy and Business do not automatically include free advance selection in every booking.

Passengers other than Economy Basic can generally choose an available seat without charge when check-in opens 24 hours before departure, unless their fare, status or another qualifying condition permits earlier selection. First offers free seat selection from booking.

For broader itinerary and fare planning, use the British Airways flights guide. This article is limited to seats, their availability and seat-specific charges or changes.

How to select a British Airways seat

  1. 1

    Confirm ticketing

Check that the reservation has been ticketed before treating the seat map as final.

  2. 2

    Identify the operating airline

Read the operated-by line because another airline may control seating.

  3. 3

    Open the seat map

Choose a seat while booking or retrieve the trip through Manage My Booking.

  4. 4

    Review eligibility and price

Check whether selection is included, paid or not yet available for each passenger and segment.

  5. 5

    Confirm the selection

Review the seat number, charge and operating flight before authorising payment.

  6. 6

    Recheck before travel

Verify the assignment again at check-in because operational or safety changes remain possible.

Economy Basic and Economy Standard seat selection

Economy Basic

Economy Basic passengers may pay to select an available seat in advance. Without a paid or otherwise qualifying selection, British Airways allocates a seat when check-in opens. Changing that allocated seat may require payment.

Economy Standard and flexible fares

Economy Standard does not guarantee free advance selection merely because it is not Basic. An available seat can generally be chosen without charge when check-in opens 24 hours before departure. A flexible ticket or another qualifying fare may provide earlier or broader selection, but the entitlement shown for the actual booking controls.

Premium Economy seat selection

British Airways calls its long-haul Premium Economy cabin World Traveller Plus. Cabin alone does not guarantee free advance seat selection. The booking may include earlier selection through its fare conditions, status or another eligibility rule; otherwise a fee can apply before check-in.

When check-in opens, passengers other than those on Economy Basic can generally choose from the seats still available without charge. A preferred seat type may already be unavailable.

Business and First seat selection

Business

Business cabin does not by itself guarantee free advance seat selection on every British Airways fare. Check the Club Europe or Club World booking for its fare conditions, status entitlement and the price shown before relying on an early selection.

First

First offers free seat selection from booking. The selected seat can still be changed by British Airways for operational, safety or security reasons, so it should be rechecked before departure.

How much British Airways seat selection costs

British Airways does not apply one fixed seat-selection price to every itinerary. The current amount is shown while booking or in Manage My Booking and varies by seat type and cabin. This guide does not publish estimates or fixed dollar prices.

Where offered, payment can be made by card. Eligible British Airways-operated seat selections may also be payable with Avios under the airline's current rules. Avios cannot be used to pay for seating on partner-operated flights.

Before payment, review the Fare Disclosure and any Post-Ticketing Service Fees. An airline seating charge and an applicable agency service fee are separate amounts; an agency fee is not a British Airways fee.

British Airways family seating

Advance selection may cost extra. British Airways says it tries to keep families together and seats each child under 12 with an accompanying adult. A party may still be separated by an aisle or placed in adjacent rows, and passengers over 12 may be seated separately.

When an infant under two travels on an adult's lap, eligible parties of up to nine people on the same booking can select seats without charge. Carrycot positions are limited and subject to availability, aircraft and safety requirements; the presence of an infant does not guarantee a particular position.

  • Keep all passengers on the same booking where possible so the airline can recognise the party.
  • Check whether advance selection is worth paying for when a particular arrangement matters.
  • Recheck every assignment because aircraft or operational changes can alter the seat map.

Disability and special-assistance seating

A passenger may qualify for free seat selection when a specific disability-related seating requirement exists. Free selection is not automatic without the qualifying assistance request, and exit-row or safety restrictions still apply.

British Airways asks passengers to request assistance through Manage My Booking at least 48 hours before departure. Some seating requirements need direct contact with British Airways, and partner-operated flights may require confirmation with the operating airline.

An independent agency can explain public guidance and help with a booking made through that agency, but it does not control accessibility eligibility, seat assignments or airline outcomes. If the trip was booked elsewhere, the original provider or operating airline may need to handle the request.

Executive Club and oneworld status benefits

British Airways Club benefits apply only when the current eligibility conditions are met and the membership details are attached correctly. Gold and corresponding oneworld Emerald members can generally select from booking for the whole party, including eligible companions on other bookings in the same cabin and flight. The member must be travelling on one of the bookings, and group-rate bookings are excluded.

Silver and corresponding oneworld Sapphire members can generally select from booking for everyone on the same booking, excluding long-haul exit rows until 24 hours before departure. Bronze and corresponding oneworld Ruby members can generally select for everyone on the same booking from seven days before departure, excluding exit rows until 24 hours before departure. The member must travel, and group-rate, Basic-fare, exit-row, companion and operating-airline conditions can limit benefits. Check every passenger and segment rather than assuming status guarantees a particular seat.

Seat selection at check-in

Online check-in normally opens 24 hours before departure. Passengers other than Economy Basic can generally choose an available seat without charge at that stage. Economy Basic passengers are allocated a seat; changing it may require payment.

This section covers only the seat step. For check-in channels, boarding passes and check-in failures, use the British Airways Check-In guide.

Partner-operated and codeshare flights

Seat selection is available through Manage My Booking for some partner-operated flights. Where it is not offered, contact the operating airline. Its rules, fees and seat map apply even when the flight carries a British Airways flight number.

Avios cannot be used to pay for partner-operated seating. A refund for a seat sold by a partner airline must be handled with that airline, and a seat request may not transfer automatically between airline systems.

Changing and refunding paid seats

Changing to a higher-priced seat may require paying the difference. Moving to a lower-priced seat generally does not refund the difference. When the flight itself changes, seats normally need to be selected again; the British Airways flight changes and cancellations guide covers the separate ticket-change process.

Paid seating is not guaranteed. British Airways may change a seat for operational, safety or security reasons. Its published refund exceptions cover a British Airways seat change where the passenger is dissatisfied with the alternative, airline cancellation of the flight, loss of exit-row eligibility reported at least 48 hours before departure, and a paid cabin upgrade where the passenger does not want to pay the seat-price difference. Where a refund is due under those exceptions, the claim must be submitted within 30 days after completion of the last flight in the itinerary.

Voluntarily cancelling a flight does not normally make paid seating refundable under British Airways' published terms. Other voluntary changes, ineligibility for a selected seat and partner-airline purchases may also fall outside British Airways' refund process. Never rely on a refund until the responsible airline confirms eligibility.

Why seat selection may be unavailable

  • Ticketing has not been completed.
  • A partner or codeshare restriction places seating with the operating airline.
  • A group or travel-agent booking has restrictions on self-service selection.
  • Bulkhead or other seats are being held for passengers with particular needs.
  • No eligible seat is currently available in the requested area or seat type.
  • The operating or marketing carrier does not support selection through the channel being used.
  • The request requires direct airline assistance.

Confirm ticketing, the operating carrier and the exact message before trying another channel. The contact page explains how to reach the agency for a booking made through our agency; another booking provider or the airline may need to act on bookings it controls.

What we check before helping with seating

  • Confirm the ticket has been issued.
  • Confirm the operating carrier.
  • Check fare type and cabin.
  • Check whether status benefits are attached correctly.
  • Check whether the passengers are on the same booking.
  • Ask whether children, an infant or a disability-related seating requirement applies.
  • Review the currently available seat map and applicable price.
  • Explain that seat assignments can still change for operational or safety reasons.
  • Explain any agency service fee before receiving authorization.

Catchaflight is an independent travel agency, not British Airways. We may explain publicly available seating rules and assist with bookings made through our agency after appropriate verification. We cannot promise a seat assignment, airline action, waiver or refund.

Final seat-selection checklist

  • Confirm ticket issuance and the operating airline for each segment.
  • Check the exact fare, cabin and recorded status entitlement.
  • Review passenger ages, infant arrangements and assistance requirements.
  • Compare the live seat map, seat type and airline price before payment.
  • Confirm which airline or booking provider controls the selection.
  • Read the paid-seat change and refund conditions before authorising a charge.
  • Recheck the assigned seat at check-in and before boarding.

A selected seat remains subject to availability and operational, safety or security changes. Keep the seat receipt, but do not promise a particular assignment, family arrangement, accessibility outcome or refund.

Frequently asked questions

Is British Airways seat selection free?

Sometimes. Eligibility depends on fare, cabin, status, passenger circumstances, timing, operating airline and availability. First includes free selection from booking; other bookings must be checked individually.

Does British Airways Economy Basic include free seat selection?

Economy Basic passengers may pay to select in advance. Otherwise British Airways allocates a seat when check-in opens, and changing that allocated seat may require payment.

When can Economy Standard passengers choose seats?

Economy Standard passengers can generally choose an available seat without charge when check-in opens 24 hours before departure. A qualifying fare, status or other condition may allow earlier selection.

Is seat selection free in British Airways Premium Economy?

Not automatically. Premium Economy cabin alone does not guarantee free advance selection; the fare, status and other eligibility conditions shown for the booking apply.

Is seat selection free in British Airways Business Class?

Not automatically. Business cabin alone does not guarantee free advance selection on every fare, although fare or status conditions may include it.

Is seat selection free in First?

Yes. British Airways offers free seat selection in First from booking, subject to seat availability and later operational, safety or security changes.

Will British Airways seat families together?

British Airways says it tries to keep families together and seats each child under 12 with an adult. Parties may be divided by an aisle or adjacent rows, and passengers over 12 may be seated separately.

Can a passenger with a disability select a seat for free?

A passenger may qualify when a specific seating requirement exists and the qualifying assistance request is recorded. It is not automatic, and some cases require direct contact with British Airways.

Can I change or refund a paid British Airways seat?

A higher-priced replacement may cost more, while a lower-priced replacement generally does not refund the difference. Refunds are limited to British Airways' published exceptions and voluntary flight cancellation does not normally qualify.

Why is British Airways seat selection unavailable?

Possible documented constraints include incomplete ticketing, partner or codeshare control, group or agency-booking restrictions, limited availability, protected bulkhead seats and requests requiring direct airline assistance.
